How to Clean Out Your Fridge and Freezer

Fridges and freezers are often missed when we clean the kitchen… it’s easy to shut the door on the them and forget about what’s going on inside! However it’s really important to make sure you have a clean fridge and freezer, to prevent build up of ice in the freezer and for obvious hygiene reasons. DO NOT let your fridge get into the state below!!!

Step 1 – ensure your fridge and freezer are empty before starting (duh!). Take this opportunity to throw away anything that is out of date or mouldy!

Preferably switch them off too, and if it’s a freezer leave the door open to defrost, we’ll explain why this is important later…

If you have time, do step one and leave it over night to thoroughly defrost. Put a towel down underneath to avoid water spilling everywhere!

If you’ve got less time, our top T&D tip is to put a bowl with boiling water inside, and close the door. Leave it to steam for 10 minutes, and check back again. Repeat as necessary.

The fridge works the same as the freezer. To avoid build up of ice and moisture at the back, ensure your appliance is not crammed full so the air can circulate around the contents. Don’t forget the little water trap at the back of the fridge! Most appliances have these, and sometimes it just needs a little wipe to avoid it clogging and not draining.

Step 2- clean the inside! We recommend using mild, anti-bacterial products inside the fridge, or natural products such as lemon juice or vinegar, to kill odours the natural way. A great tip we’ve heard is to keep an opened box of baking soda on a shelf which will absorb odours over time.

The easiest way to clean the shelves and trays is to take them out and leave them to soak in a hot bowl full of washing up liquid. Give them a good scrub, rinse well and after drying them off put them back into the fridge. The trick is remembering where each shelf goes!

Step 3- ensure the fridge/freezer is clean on the outside too! Dust and other things settling on the grill at the back can make your appliance work harder than it needs to, so save energy by dusting (try a clean paint brush to brush off dust!) and vacuuming behind it.

There you have it, easy peasy! If this all sounds like too much trouble them why not get Trust and Dust to do it for you?! We do a thorough fridge clean as part of our deep cleans, email us for more information ✨
